What Are the Steps for Eyelid Surgery?

When you are scheduled for eyelid surgery in Honolulu, you may have a lot of questions for your surgeon. How long will it take to recover from the procedure? What are the steps for eyelid surgery? When will I see the results?

What Are the Steps for Eyelid Surgery?

At the office of Dr. Bradford Lee, we understand that a procedure like this can seem overwhelming. Blepharoplasty surgeries are designed to fix drooping lids and eye bags, which not only contribute to the signs of aging but can cause problems with your vision if they droop too low. Below, we’ll outline the basic steps you’ll take when undergoing this type of procedure.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is the best way to correct drooping, sagging, and discoloration of the skin around your eyes. This procedure can improve your vision and remove any obstacles. The eyelid surgery procedures that we offer primarily focus on:
  • Under-eye bags
  • Eye fat deposits
  • Puffy eyelids
  • Excessive skin in the eyes
  • Contours that are not aligned
Talk to your surgeon if you feel you are a candidate for eyelid surgery.

Step 1: Preparation for Surgery

The beginning of your blepharoplasty will look similar to other surgeries since it requires anesthesia. Depending on your needs and the severity of your drooping eyelids, you will have either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Your comfort and safety are always our top priorities at all times.

Step 2: The Surgical Procedure

During surgery, Dr. Lee will make a very small incision within the folds of your eyelids. The incision is made in such a way that as the creases of your eyelids heal, they will hide your scars. So, your eyes will naturally conceal any signs of surgery.

Upper Eyelids

If you are getting upper eyelid surgery, also known as upper blepharoplasty, an incision will be made on your eyelid’s natural crease. From there, deposits of fat can be rearranged to a more pleasing shape. Your muscles and skin can also be changed to offer a better support structure for your eyes.

Lower Eyelids

Lower eyelids are treated with a small incision under the line of your lower eyelashes. So, from there, the process is similar: excess skin is removed, fat deposits are repositioned, and muscles are tightened.

Step 3: Recovery

The doctor will close your incisions using a suture or glue process, which can be removed after a week. The recovery process can take a few weeks, during which time your eyes may feel bruised. Also, swelling is normal and to be expected after the procedure, and your doctor will give you cold compresses to keep comfortable. You should be able to see results within that same period of time. Still, most patients are able to return to work and go out into the public in about 2 weeks, making it one of the fastest recovery times that we offer.

Who is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

You can arrange a consultation with your surgeon to discuss your candidacy for one of our eyelid surgery procedures. Although each treatment will be different for each person, it is important to understand the requirements for this type of surgery. Candidates often have:
  • Consistent problems with hanging and drooping eyelids
  • Excellent health records
  • There are no issues with smoking and drinking
  • Family members and friends who are able to take them home following the procedure
You can speak with a professional immediately, regardless of whether you are certain that you want the surgery or not.
